DYFR Records NL

In the world of electronic music when you think you have eventually got your bearings and have a fairly good insight as to what is going on, you shortly realise that you only scratch the surface.  You uncover an unlimited network of people spending their spare time uploading videos, mixes and samples of their own and favourite music via online radio and blogs.  Their aim is to simply spread their message to those who want to hear it.
Recently I came into contact with Baz Reznik the owner of DYFR records via comments on Facebook.  Shortly after linking to his website, listening to his sample tracks as well as getting up to speed on what he does and where I realised that this find was one of those which makes searching many hours for fresh material worthwhile.
The abbreviated name ‘DYFR’ (Do it Yourself, Fuck the Rest) immediately intrigued me and I contacted Baz and got more information out of him.  As anyone who is in the know, knows that in this game there is nothing but politics so a label named and inspired due to his disgust with it all is more than appropriate.  Although the name can seem aggressive and stand offish Baz seems like a pretty easy going fellow who has quite an interesting taste in music ranging from Italo Disco right through to Acid and Techno.
The music clips hosted on the site are what impressed me the most and and caused me to contact him directly and purchase from the source.  The first EP on DYFR ‘Out of Your Head’ is produced by Baz himself.  Give these a listen and hopefully what I have to say makes sense.

The first track ‘Beginning’ opens the EP beautifully with rim shots bringing subtle rhythm over its warped medium.  ’Stalking’ follows this and it takes a much tougher line with heavy acid punches throughout backed up with an even heavier kick.  ’Radiostar’ sports an interesting vocal over this electro-vibe and sounds somewhat inspired by AUX88.  ’Haunting’ an appropriate instrumental which begins to see the EP out.  Downloaders can also pick up a remix of stalking.

The following EP ‘Spank the Butler’ which tracks from Spank the Butler and a bonus CD with remixes.

The first track ‘Cosmic Ray’ is heavily kick laden with with a looming baseline and dynamic synths giving it a very eery feel. ‘The Lost World’ is more than appropriate in its description of track 2, heavy in acid loops and other space age orbs which set the dark tone.  ’Bits & Bubbles’ given its name you would think it would be in some other left field but its a suitable mix of the dynamic nature of the first and the darkness of the second.  This is a very good release which paints an interesting soundscape due to its Armageddon like vibe!  **HIGHLY RECOMMEND**
The labels third release features productions from MZR and Baz Reznik.

‘Lump Doch Sex’ is no doubt a serious dance floor pleaser, the vocal provides an interesting swing and from it (when approaching the final straight) an almost minimal acid loop destroys.  The second track is by no means any less of a monster, this Detroit inspired wonder would put you in mind of a Scan 7 record and is certainly of as good quality.  Baz gives us ‘High Low’ on the flip side which is much slower than the other two but has a completely different drive suitable for another part of the night.
DYFR’s most recent release (out in July 2011) ‘Special Edition’ composed as a solo project by Baz is an interesting piece which is somewhat different to those previous.

The first track ‘The Attic’ (although not sure why it was named this) goes off on a tangent and sounds like it was recorded in Tel Aviv on a hazy evening with a subtle wind whispering through the track.  Again, I don’t want to over use it in a single post but this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!  ’Stoppera’ is more in line with the rest of his work which is very acid /electro influenced.
Although this is an NL based label it covers a lot of the bases without dwelling too much on one sound.  What is most appealing about this label is that its releases provide a very visual output, something which is very difficult to master and it separates great from good labels.  Proof that DYFR is a label for the dance floor and the mind.  Recording in inspirational places like bunkers and beaches may have been hard work but it has certainly paid off for Baz and the others with their input.  Thankfully this is not all from DYFR, 2012 will bring exciting new things…Watch this space! This is available in vinyl and MP3 format through DYFR’s own site and all the usual outlets.
